From Boxed-In to Breathtaking: Reimagining the New-Build Garden

This is what many new-build homeowners inherit: A flat patch of lawn, squeezed between brick walls and a high fence.
Technically, it’s a garden.But in reality? It’s a corridor. A green doormat. A forgotten space.
But it doesn’t have to stay this way.
With thoughtful planting design, even the most barren plot becomes a place of rhythm, beauty, and life.
Here are two ways I reimagined the exact same space:
A contemporary, minimalist design. Evergreen grasses and shrubs, soft lavender for colour, two flowering cherries to delight through the seasons, and a corten steel bowl for reflection. An arch marks the journey — subtle, sculptural, intentional.
A Japanese-inspired retreat. A round lawn with stepping stones, a gravel path curving gently around it, and layered planting in shades of green and rust. Japanese maples and cloud-pruned evergreens provide year-round structure and serenity. A small water feature adds movement and calm.

This is what planting design does.
It turns blank into breathtaking.Same canvas. Infinite possibility.
You don’t need paving. You don’t need a huge budget. You just need plants — placed with care, intention, and imagina
tion.
